Exploring Access to Healthcare for People with Disabilities in Tanzania

Program Content

This virtual exchange program introduces students to healthcare, particularly physical therapy, in Tanzania as it pertains to people with disabilities and/or special needs. Students will become acquainted with the various challenges persons with disabilities and/or special needs face with regards to access to healthcare. They will also engage with various professionals and organizations that work to address these challenges through education, as well as through the empowerment of people with disabilities and/or special needs. Students will apply their medical knowledge during virtual engagements (e.g.: online consultations) and will be expected to work in groups to produce a virtual presentation based on these engagements and other knowledge gained during the program.

This program is guided by EDU Africa’s five transformative learning goals: Intercultural Competence, Global Citizenship, Personal Growth, Intellectual Growth, and Professional Development. As such, students will also be encouraged towards holistic growth through various co-curricular activities throughout the program. These activities will also give students the opportunity to get to know Tanzania, Tanzanian people, and Tanzanian culture(s).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this program, students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate basic conversational Kiswahili communication skills
2. Articulate knowledge of Tanzanian culture(s)
3. Compare and contrast obstacles to access to healthcare faced by people with disabilities and/or special needs in Tanzania and their home country
4. Discuss global environmental challenges such as climate change and the potential localized effects thereof, particularly on the lives of people with disabilities in Tanzania and their home country
5. Critically reflect on their own individual growth and transformation
6. Evaluate the healthcare needs of a local person with disabilities and/or special needs
7. Propose pragmatic solutions to the healthcare needs/challenges of a local person with disabilities and/or special needs
8. Apply medical knowledge during interactive project work with local people with disabilities and/or special needs
9. Articulate a balanced understanding of disabilities and special needs in Tanzania

• Service-learning: presentations on solutions for identified needs

Facilitation

Our team works collaboratively with faculty to curate and deliver quality programs. Your dedicated Program Manager will assist with program development and arrangements, supporting and advising you along the way. Your assigned Program Facilitator will be able to assist with session facilitation, lead reflections, and support participants on their learning journey. Finally, our Technical Support Team is available to set up and ensure the smooth running of virtual sessions.
