Things to do in Cape Town for Students
There are many ways to explore Cape Town, but to interact with the beautiful city’s people and surroundings is the best way. To see things you normally wouldn’t see during your travels and experience, take the educational route and learn more about the city’s people, its past and everyday life.
Taking an educational tour through Cape Town does not mean you don’t get to see all the usual spots, it just means you have a different approach to them. We have listed our top Things to do in Cape Town for Students:
Robben Island
When in Cape Town you have to visit the world famous Robben Island. It is here where the iconic Mr Nelson Mandela spent decades serving out a political prison sentence. A tour of the island and the prison is good, but for a great educational experience, why not stay overnight on the island! Your stay will be in one of the old prisons, which has been turned into dormitory-style accommodation. While on the island, enjoy an interactive dinner with one of Mandela’s ex-prison guards, who knew him well and shared many moments and experiences with him.
Table Mountain
Table Mountain is another iconic site that you cannot miss while in Cape Town. Take the cable car up and view the entire city from the top. That is the usual route – but you could also hike to the top and abseil down a cliff! You may also learn about the amazing plant species in the Cape Floral Kingdom. This is one of the richest plant areas in Africa – covering only 1% of the African continent, but home to 20% of its plant species. Class in the Clouds will give you all the answers on the Cape Floral Kingdom.
Cape Town Culture
While spending time in the streets of Cape Town you will meet and experience people and their cultures. But the best place to learn all about them is in their homes. With the Cape Malay Cooking class, you will meet a Capetonian from the Cape Malay culture, learn about their cuisine, and help prepare your own meal. This experience engages all senses and gives you great insight into the diversity of the people of Cape Town.
Get involved
This interactive experience can become more than just an experience. For those who want to take a step further, there are plenty of Service Learning opportunities. This brings in an element of rolling up your sleeves and giving back to the community and environment of Cape Town.
