Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal access to opportunities. Although South Africans gained freedom from apartheid in 1994, inequality is still prominent there.
Created to curb the problem of gangsterism in the township of Khayelitsha in Capetown, the 18 Gangster Museum is a place to engage with the challenges of violence and gangsterism in Cape Town. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, this museum was not only a center for education but a center for support and development in the community. Without the income generated from the museum, the 18 Gangster Museum had to put its community projects on hold.
Interns will be tasked with redeveloping the community programs at the 18 Gangster Museum. Through research, program planning, and developing a business plan, interns will engage with the 18 Gangster Museum staff to revive this crucial community resource and ensure that the community youth have access to programs that can once again offer safety, expression, and hope. Prerequisites: Interns should be enrolled in a post-secondary institution and be interested in using their skills to support social justice initiatives in South Africa.
