Students will be introduced to the complex landscape of mental health in Africa, specifically focusing on Kenya.

Participants will explore the challenges surrounding mental health in Kenya and the need for detailed examinations and approaches. They will learn about mental health and well-being in hospitals, communities, and wellness centers in both rural and urban areas. Additionally, participants will study the socio-cultural and socio-economic factors influencing mental health in Kenya, as well as the prevalence of mental health issues and the effectiveness of existing interventions. The goal of this program is to provide participants with a strong understanding of mental health, preparing them to make valuable contributions in their respective fields. This outline can be customized to align with specific interests and career goals, offering a flexible foundation for understanding and addressing mental health in Kenya.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this program, students should be able to:
  • Understand the impact of tradition, culture, and faith on the attitudes and approaches to mental health and well-being in Kenya 
  • Recognize the competitive value of knowledge produced on the African continent
  • Demonstrate an increased tolerance for ambiguity 
  • Demonstrate an increased personal self-awareness
  • Demonstrate attitudes of curiosity
  • Examine how international relationships affect mental health policies and practices worldwide
  • Develop culturally sensitive non-verbal communication skills for intercultural interactions
