As in many other places, gender dynamics and women’s experiences are complex in Malawian society.

Students will explore topics such as gender equality, women’s empowerment, and how gender intersects with culture, tradition, and development. The program will involve interactive discussions, field research, and interactions with local activists and community leaders to understand the challenges and opportunities for promoting gender equality in Malawi. Participants will gain insights into the perspectives and initiatives of Malawian women and analyze the cultural norms and social structures that influence gender roles and relationships. The program is designed to be adaptable to participants’ goals and regional focus, ensuring a personalized and relevant learning experience.

Learning Outcomes

The curation of this program option incorporated the learning outcomes listed below. However, specific learning outcomes and activities can be constructed in collaboration with our dedicated curriculum development team to create a customized program.

By the end of this program, students should be able to:
  • More effectively communicate across cultural boundaries, and apply this understanding to foster intercultural respect and collaboration
  • Engage with and advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment on a global scale
  • Reflect on and challenge their perspectives on gender and empowerment, leading to a deeper personal understanding of global gender issues and a commitment to fostering equity and inclusivity in their own lives
  • Critically analyze and synthesize the complex interactions between gender dynamics, cultural traditions, and socio-economic development in Malawi
  • Effectively apply insights gained from gender dynamics and women’s experiences in Malawi to develop informed, culturally sensitive strategies for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in their professional contexts
